PCSX2 memory card transfer
Move PS2 saves between PCSX2 installs using the memory card manager. Copy the card files, place them in the new folder, then load them.
A memory card is one file
Every PS2 save lives inside a card image — a single file with a .ps2 extension, normally 8 MB. There is no database and no cloud sync to chase. Moving saves means moving that file and telling the new install where it is.
This is why the “memory card not formatted” message appears after a reinstall or a move to a portable build: PCSX2 created a fresh, empty card at the default path because the old one was not there.
Find the card you already have
- Open Tools → Memory Card Manager.
- The two slots list the card files in use, with their paths.
- Note the file name in the slot holding your saves — usually
Mcd001.ps2unless it was renamed. - Copy that file out before uninstalling or moving anything.
If the manager shows an empty card while you know saves exist, use File → Open to browse to the folder you were using before. Portable builds keep memcards next to the executable; installer builds keep it under Documents.
Put it into the new install
- Copy the
.ps2file into the new install’smemcardsfolder. - Open the Memory Card Manager in the new install and select that card for Slot 1.
- Check the card is not marked read-only — a card in Program Files inherits folder permissions and will fail silently.
- Boot a game that has a save and load it from the in-game menu.
Region and format traps
A PAL game cannot read a save written by an NTSC copy, even on the same card — the save ID includes the region. Keep one card per region if you play both.
Never hit Format on a card that might contain saves. Formatting is immediate and there is no recovery. If a card is unreadable, copy it somewhere safe first and try opening it in the manager before deciding anything.
