PCSX2 not opening or working
A missing runtime stops PCSX2 from opening. Install the VC++ redist, update your GPU driver, then launch as admin.
A silent close is not a crash
If you double-click PCSX2 and nothing happens — no window, no error, no splash — the executable is failing before it can draw anything. That is almost always a missing dependency, not a corrupted download.
The three dependencies that matter:
- Visual C++ Redistributable (x64) — PCSX2 is a 64-bit Qt application and needs the current runtime.
- A GPU driver with working Vulkan — the default renderer will not fall back quietly.
- Write access to its own folder — a build unpacked into Program Files cannot save config.
Get it launching again
- Install the latest VC++ Redistributable for x64 from Microsoft. Install the x86 package too if you also run older 32-bit tools.
- Update the GPU driver. On a laptop with switchable graphics, force PCSX2 onto the discrete GPU in the driver control panel.
- Right-click the PCSX2 shortcut → Run as administrator for one launch. If the window appears, set the same permanently under Properties → Compatibility.
- If it opened once and then stopped, run the installer again and choose Repair.
- Still nothing? Launch from a terminal with the console visible, or check the log folder for the last line before exit.
Window opens but games don’t
That is a different failure and the fix is elsewhere. A missing BIOS produces a message at boot, a bad image fails at the disc read, and a black screen after launch is a renderer problem. Check the BIOS path first — PCSX2 will not boot anything without a valid dump from your own console.
After a Windows update
Feature updates occasionally reset the graphics driver to a generic one and re-enable Memory Integrity, both of which can stop PCSX2 from creating a Vulkan device. If it worked yesterday and not today, reinstall the GPU driver before touching PCSX2 itself.
