emudeck install steam deck guide

EmuDeck EmuDeck latest / SteamOS (Steam Deck), Windows Last verified October 2026 Risk: none
Quick answer

Install EmuDeck on Steam Deck from Desktop Mode, then let it place ROMs and BIOS folders. Reboot into Game Mode before checking Steam for new entries.

EmuDeck is a setup script, not an emulator — it installs and configures a stack of emulators for you. Almost every “EmuDeck is broken” report traces back to skipping one of three things: running it in Game Mode instead of Desktop Mode, not letting it finish, or checking Steam before rebooting.

Install EmuDeck

  1. Switch to Desktop Mode
Hold the power button and choose Desktop Mode, or pick it from the Steam menu. EmuDeck is a desktop application.
You see the KDE Plasma desktop with a taskbar, not the Steam interface.
  2. Download and run the installer
Get the installer from emudeck.com — the project's own site. Run it and let it complete; it's downloading and placing a lot of files, and interrupting it leaves the stack half-configured.
The installer reaches its completion screen instead of an error dialog.
  3. Let it create the ROM and BIOS folders
EmuDeck creates standardized folders for your ROMs and BIOS files on your microSD or internal storage. Note where it puts them — you'll copy files there later.
A roms/ folder exists with per-system subfolders, and a bios/ folder sits beside it.

After the install

  1. Reboot into Game Mode before checking Steam
Switch back to Game Mode and let the library refresh. Newly added entries appear in your library — often under a "EmuDeck" collection or shelf.
Emulator entries and any parsers you ran appear in the library. If they don't, refresh the library once from the Steam menu.
  2. Copy your ROMs in, then rescan
Put ROM files into the matching per-system folders EmuDeck created. Run the parser (Steam ROM Manager, which EmuDeck installs for you) to add them to Steam with artwork.
Games appear in Steam with cover art. If they don't, the ROMs are in the wrong folder or the parser didn't run — see ROMs not showing fixes.
  3. Place BIOS files before first launch
Systems like PS1 and PS2 need BIOS files from your own console. Drop them into the bios/ folder EmuDeck created — not into the ROMs folder.
The core detects the BIOS on first launch instead of erroring. Detection problems are covered in ROMs not showing fixes and RetroArch BIOS not detected.

Windows vs Steam Deck

EmuDeck also installs on Windows, with the same flow minus Desktop Mode — run the installer, let it finish, then use Steam ROM Manager from the Start menu. The folder layout is identical, so the ROMs and BIOS guidance above applies unchanged.

When the installer itself fails

If the installer itself fails, it’s usually permissions or a disk-space problem — free space and re-run it rather than repairing piece by piece. Collection of the most common post-install problems lives in ROMs not showing fixes.
