Xenoblade on Switch emulators
Update Ryubing and clear the shader cache to clear Xenoblade 2 infinite loading; on RDNA4 GPUs switch off Vulkan to stop Xenoblade 3 flicker.
The Xenoblade games raise two different problems on Switch emulators: Xenoblade Chronicles 2 can hang on an infinite loading screen, and Xenoblade Chronicles 3 can flicker on Vulkan with certain newer GPUs. They have separate causes, so treat them separately.
Xenoblade 2: infinite loading
Infinite loading is almost always a stale shader/pipeline cache or an out-of-date build, not a corrupt game. The game is compiling pipelines it can’t finish, so it never reaches gameplay.
-
Update the emulatorPipeline and shader fixes ship per release. A load that hung on an older build often finishes on the current one — update first. The loading screen completes into gameplay.
-
Clear the shader cacheDelete the game's shader cache and let the emulator rebuild it. A cache written during a failed compile can keep reproducing the hang at the same point. The game recompiles on next boot instead of loading a broken cache.
-
Match the game update to the buildAn update the emulator build doesn't handle can stall on load. Confirm the game update version is supported, and switch Vulkan/OpenGL if one backend hangs.Loading finishes on at least one backend.
Xenoblade 3: Vulkan flicker on RDNA4
On some newer AMD cards (RX 9000 / RDNA4), the Xenoblade Chronicles 3 Vulkan renderer flickers — a tracked driver/renderer interaction, not a settings mistake.
-
Switch the backend off VulkanUntil the flicker is fixed, use OpenGL (or another backend where offered) for Xenoblade 3 on RDNA4 cards. Vulkan is where the flicker reproduces. The image is stable on the alternative backend.
-
Try a driver or build updateBecause it's a renderer/driver interaction, a newer GPU driver or emulator build may resolve it. Check the tracked issue for the current state.Flicker reduces or stops after updating.
